What to Expect in a Routine Eye Exam
Your comprehensive eye exam includes pupil dilation, a range of tests to measure visual acuity and eye muscle movement. Your doctor will examine the inside of your eyes for signs of abnormalities. Special equipment is used to screen for conditions like cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. You will be asked to complete a medical history questionnaire to identify potential risk factors for eye problems.

There are several key nutrients that are important in maintaining your eye health. Consider adding a variety of vitamins and healthy foods to your diet.
Vitamin C – found in many fruits and vegetables (such as oranges, strawberries, red or green bell peppers, and cabbage). Vitamin C protects your eyes from damaging radicals and your body uses it in producing collagen to provide structure to your eyes.
Vitamin E – found in nuts, vegetable oils and greens (such as almonds, sunflower oil, and broccoli). Vitamin E protects cells in the eyes from unstable molecules called free radicals, which break down healthy tissue.
Zinc – found in legumes, seeds, and meat (such as garbanzo beans, pumpkin seeds, and eggs). Zinc plays a vital role in bringing vitamin A from the liver to the retina in order to produce melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Impaired vision, such as poor night vision and cloudy cataracts, has been linked to zinc deficiency.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin – found in fruits and vegetables but especially leafy green vegetables (such as spinach, kale, collard greens, and swiss chard). Many studies show that lutein and zeaxanthin reduce the risk of chronic eye diseases.
Omega-3 – found in cold water fish, seeds, and oil (such as salmon, tuna, flax seeds, chia seeds, and olive oil. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for proper visual development and retinal function and can help reduce inflammation, enhance tear production, and support the eye’s oily outer layer.
